Meanwhile Dr. Karan was leaning across the receptionist’s desk, Samiksha saw him as she emerged with a nurse into the room. He was as usual busy checking some files and talking to nurse Roma at reception. Suddenly he fell a pull on his apron, like someone tugging it from behind. He turned around to find a smiling Samiksha.
“Well, I guess someone is already so well to be able to be released from our hospital, right Roma?”
When Karan addressed Roma by her first name, envy pierced Samiksha’s heart like a knife.
“Absolutely Karan. Just look at her. She looks so fine. With regards to her walking practice sessions, there is no need to delay now. So that she is all set to go home infact. Right Samiksha?”
Samiksha forced a smile
towards Roma and looked back at Karan, who was obviously admiring her cute gestures of jealousy.
“I hope you didn’t feel pain in your foot again, as you strained it yesterday?”
“No. I am very fine. I gotta go. When are my walking sessions starting Karan, I mean Dr. Karan?”
“Soon. Now have a quick round and go back in your nest, princess.”
The sweet gesture brought a sweet smile on her lips erasing the bittenrness of jealousy and anger.
“Hmm. Did I hear it right? Did she address you as Karan? And you calling her princess?”
“Do you need an ear specialist? Kapoor is specialised in that. Should I fix an appointment?”
“My ears are absolutely fine Karan.”
“Then you heard it right.”
Karan left from there after a naughty wink to Roma.
Jolly had come
to be with her and since one day Samiksha hadn’t seen Madhu. In the light of the sweet feelings she was experiencing currently, she had forgotten everything else. Realising her carelessness she immediately questioned Jolly.
“Why is mum not coming to meet me? Is she fine?”
“Sami, its just a day that she couldn’t come. She probably needs rest. Right?”
“Yes, but I am missing her.”
“We will call her later. So how is your doctor ha?”
“He is fine,” a blushing Samiksha revealed not realising how Jolly had thrown a sudden shot at her. Slowly she looked at Jolly to find her grinning.
“You naughty one . . .
Are you two? I mean, did he propose to you? Are you in love my baby?”
The questions were answered by one hug of Samiksha and Jolly was about to scream.
“Shhh. If he hears he wont like it. After all it is a hospital.”
“Am so sorry my darling. I will keep that in mind. By the way, isn’t it like a fairy tale. you come here after getting an injury and end up finding the love of your life. I mean, its crazy.”
“Can’t agree more. Had never expected in my wildest dreams something like this can happen to a tom boy like me,” Samiksha said biting her tongue.
“In the afternoon, Samiksha was reading a book when Karan visited her.
“So how is the princess? I mean her mood?”
“Princess is not very happy. I am missing mum. Didn’t see her since day before yesterday.”
“She needs rest too Samiksha. She was on her toes since the accident right. You want to speak to her?”
“Yes please.”
Karan dialled Madhu’s number
and asked about her well being. He stole a glance from Samiksha and turned slightly.
“You fine?”
“What happened Karan? Let me talk to mum.”
Karan handed over the phone so that she doesn’t strain herself again.
“Mum, what’s wrong?”
“Nothing child. A mild fever.”
“Fever? Mum I am coming home. And why you hide this from me?”
“Am fine. Don’t exert yourself please. I have taken medicine. I will be fine.”
“Please take rest and let me know about your health at intervals.”
“Yes grand ma. I think you are the one who should do this. You haven’t messaged me since yesterday.”
“Sorry mum. This won’t repeat. Take care. Love you.”
As Karan took the phone Samiksha started crying and hid her face in her palms.
“Don’t worry about her aunty. I am here. You please take care and send me the ss of the prescription your doctor gave.”
Karan cuddled her
and she rested her head on his chest releasing tears on his apron.
“Its ok. Don’t cry Samiksha. She will be fine. I am sure it must be a flu that is all. I will visit her myself in afternoon. Ok?”
His reassurance calmed her down and she looked into his eyes.
“Karan, she is not my aunt. She is my mom. I cannot bear anything happening to her. She has given her whole life in making me what I am today Karan. When I was small, she has sacrificed her sleep so that I sleep peacefully.”
“I understand your feelings dear. You can support her from here too. Be in touch with her and assure her that you are there. Assuring someone that they are not alone in this world, is a very deep feeling Samiksha. I have seen patients longing for their relatives on the beds. People do formalities without a touch of concern. Continue being a good daughter, by assuring her that you are always there, for her.”
“Yes Karan I will be there for her, always.”
“I am glad to hear it.
Life is full of trials and tests. It punches us in face at times and sees how we react. If we are selfish, we would react without empathy or feelings. We should be kind enough to understand that every person has some shortcomings. Relationships will breathe longer and also be healthier with a generous mindset. I guess you have got a dose of my lecture today along with your medicines?”
“Your words soothe me Karan. They keep me grounded.” she looked into his eyes and continued,
“I am not the same person who was admitted here days ago. I was very proud of my achievements. Had the feeling that nothing could defeat me, untill fate knocked me down that day on the ground.”
“Now see. I am lying here at the mercy of others. Undoubtedly your staff is so kind. They don’t make a patient feel dependent or helpless. They serve with kindness. But it is you who has taught me patience, tolerance, amd the power of staying calm. That is the reason I love . . “
Samiksha swallowed her words, gulping nervously as she looked slowly at Karan.
“Love what? My hospital? My staff?”
Samiksha was at loss of words.
“Answer me. Complete your sentence,” Karan demanded. He slid his hand over Samiksha’s and gripped it, looking into her eyes.
“No one has made me this vulnerable Samiksha. I am gentle, quiet. But after you came into my life, I experienced emotions of envy, the fear of separation. Certainly, I studied about heart in medical terms and I know every bit of it, what it is made up of, how it works. But heart was just a diagram or an organ for me, till you took it away.
Little did I know that when a person enters here”, he kept Samiksha’s hand on his chest, “it is occupied by that person, forever. Likewise, it beats faster at the mere sight of that person and calms down also at a loving glance of that one person. Not to mention, you are that person Samiksha, and the ruler of this thudding part of mine, now and always.”

Instead of answering verbally, Samiksha hugged Karan and buried her face in his neck. The feeling of protection she felt at that moment was something she had never experienced before. She caressed his hair providing solace to his soul. Without a delay, he reciprocated her gesture thereupon igniting her desire for him.
At the same time
Samiksha also demonstrated her feelings, forgetting the universe around them. He pulled out slowly from her hug and caressed her face tenderly.
“I love you Karan,” saying this she kissed him with utmost care and fragility. Given that he had become a very important part of her existence, she held him with vulnerability. In contrast, Karan returned her kiss with the same care.
They kissed each other regardless of where they were. Along with the romanttic atmosphere in the ward at present, were the duties running in Karan’s subconscious mind. He slowly moved back his face and said lovingly,
“Samiksha, I have to go now.” She stopped him by placing a finger on his lips.
“Go,” she said with a smile and placed her hand on his chest, “I am already with you wherever you go.”
He kissed her forehead and left from the ward.
Samiksha was not alone in the ward though. Karan was present with her, inside her beating heart, her heart therapist.
