Madhu was out in the lobby, and Jolly went to her home for a break. Samiksha was surfing through her phone on her bed.
Dr. Karan came towards her with his magnificent walk.
Samiksha tried to turn
to the opposite direction, but her foot hurt and she cried in pain.
“Be careful”, Karan told her out of concern.
“Teach me football sometimes. Wanted to learn since long. Never got time to do so though.” Samiksha was surprised at the ease with which Karan was talking to her.
“Private ward is still not available.” Saying this, Karan waited for her reaction.
Eventually she turned back and glanced at him.
Certainly, he has some charm and a magnetic pull. A thought crossed Samiksha’s mind.
“How is your foot now? Is it hurting?” Karan asked her.
Samiksha paused for a while and eyed him from head to toe.
“So if your heart has consented to talk to me, may I get my answer?”
A faint smile touched her lips and he had a broad smile on his.
“Not much.”
“That is good. In fact great. So let us speed up your recovery by getting a small operation done. I want to see you playing football again.”
“Operation?
Why? Mum never mentioned this,” an alarmed Samiksha almost screamed.
“Shhh. That patient will get scared. By the way I had told your mum not to tell you this.” Karan awaited her response.
Obviously Samiksha was still in the shock which Karan gave her.
“Relax. It is a minor operation. Don’t worry.”
“Who will do my operation?”
“Me.”
Everything fell in place for Samiksha at once.
“What happened doctor?”, Madhu asked as soon as she entered the ward.
“Absolutely nothing. In fact my patient is more than happy to get operated.”
Madhu was shocked to see Samiksha cool even after hearing the name of ‘operation’.
“So I shall get things ready. We will be doing few tests now and tommorow morning we will get you operated then.”
Karan left from there after informing.
“I hope my baby is not scared?”
“No mum. Dr. Karan is going to do it. So no issues.”
Madhu looked with an open mouth at her, as the ‘change of ward’ issue had completely vanished from Samiksha’s mind.
“I am glad you are relaxed. Two months are left for the completion of your final year Samiksha. Can I tell you something?”
“Yes mum.”
“Actually after the operation, atleast six weeks your foot will be in plaster.”
“Six weeks?” Samiksha asked with concern.
“Yes darling. It will take time to cure.”
“Mum, my match? My finals are due. How will I play?” A sobbing Samiksha told Madhu.
Madhu wiped her eyes,
and took her near.
“Some things are beyond our control Samiksha. We don’t get what ever we want, everytime. Please understand.”
By and large, Samiksha was upset and angry too.
“Sam, I forgot to tell. Jolly had called up. Your team won the semi finals. Congrats baby.”
“What? Yeah ! I knew we would do it . Am so glad.” Samiksha was all smiles after hearing the news. But the fact that she won’t be able to play in the finals made her upset and grumpy.
Jolly brought food for Madhu, sent her home for some rest. Meanwhile Samiksha was taken on a wheel chair for some tests. Jolly accompanied her for the same.
On the way back to her ward, she saw Dr. Karan at the reception. He was busy talking to the receptionist.

As soon as he saw her, he smiled at her. Clearly, Samiksha was not used to doing anything fake, let alone smiling. For this reason, she forced a smile, and went to her ward.
It was around 8 pm and visitors were told to leave slowly, as patients needed to rest now. Jolly persuaded Madhu to go home and take rest. Mahesh had called Madhu to ask about Samiksha’s health. He was a bit upset why Samiksha wasn’t admitted in a more posh hospital. Madhu had already tried convincing him, that this was not only the nearest hospital at that time, but also a dependable one.
Samiksha had her dinner,
and Madhu had left. Jolly sat with her for some time and then was in the lobby for a walk. Dr. Karan was on a round for a routine checking. Samiksha was reading a novel when he walked towards her bed.
“Hmm. Her Prince Charming.”
“Hello. I love to read. Do you?”
“Not as such. I feel what is written in such novels and stories is much rosy and unrealistic. Undoubtedly, real life is very different and simple.”
“On the contrary, I feel people read such stuff for escaping from the harsh facts of life. There is nothing wrong in reading such fiction and fantasy books.”
“I am not denying what you said. Moreover, I just mean to say, people specially the younger lot like you should not dream for a smooth and happy endings to everything ,after reading them.”
“Younger lot? So how old are you? Fifty? Sixty?”
Karan broke into a laughter and he suppressed it by covering his lips, as the other patient had slept.
“Come on. Tell me.”
“Guess?”
Some aquaintances
are destined. Eventually, people who have met for the first time in their lives, overcome the tag of strangers and communicate. They can talk, converse and debate on almost all topics and matters. . .
“Hmm, 25 to 30 ?” Samiksha waited for his reaction.
“You are nearby.”
Samiksha was wondering, and started calculating the tenure needed for becoming a doctor.
A nurse came in to call Karan.
“Sir Mr. Roy wants to see you.”
Dr. Roy was the over all incharge of Merciful Hands hospital.
“Yes sure.” Before leaving he said,
“Guess.”
Samiksha smiled and got back to her novel, still calculating.
27, Um. No 28 May be.

Next morning Madhu and Jolly were getting Samiksha ready for the operation. Nurse Roma came there and informed,
“Mam, we will be proceeding towards the OT in few minutes. I will just check her blood pressure and pulse.”
“Nurse, is Dr. Karan out there? I wanted to have a word with him.”
Madhu enquired.
“Mam, Dr. Karan is busy with an emergency operation. He will be free only after 2 hours.”
“But then he will be doing my operation,” Samiksha quickly questioned.
“Yes, he was supposed to do so. But he had to operate another patient in emergency. So Dr. Ram will be doing the needful.”
Owing to
the announcement, Madhu and Jolly stared at each other in fear of how Samiksha would react now, as she was expecting Dr. Karan.
“I am not going to the opeartion theatre then,” Samiksha told in an angry tone.
The nurse looked at Madhu with a dismay.
“No worries nurse. Give us two minutes. Actually she is our only daughter, so . .” Madhu was at loss of words.
“Nurse can you give us just two minutes please.”
The nurse left after analysing the situation.
“Baby, I told you yesterday things don’t happen as we wish always. I agree he was going to operate you but . .”
“Then why did he break his promise. He didn’t keep his word.”
“Sami,
first of all he did not promise us anything. He just informed. And he is a doctor here for all his patients. May be someone needed him more than us. And . . ” Jolly tried to make her understand.
“Can we go to the operation theatre. People are not here to serve only me. They have other works too. Let us go mum.”
