#5 Betaab ( 1983)

Betaab, meaning restless. This 1983 movie is my favourite till date. Its unique intense storyline and the unforgettable, fabulous songs being the reasons. Till date I watch it with the same fun, intensity and above all smile.
It was Sunny Deol and Amrita Singh‘s debut movie and became a superhit because of the amazing chemistry between the leads.
Plot
Sunny (Sunny Deol) stays with his old mother Sumitra (Nirupa Roy) in a remote village in Tikamgarh. He is a free spirited soul who loves a carefree life. Once his family used to be very rich and they were good friends with another wealthy family of Sardar Dinesh Singh Hirjee (Shammi Kapoor) of that time. He and Dinesh Singh’s only daughter Roma (Amrita Singh) were close friends in their childhood. He sees Roma’s photo with her father in a magazine and recollects the sweet childhood memories spent with her.
Now Dinesh Singh has become more wealthier and doesn’t want to keep any relations with the lower class society people. One day Roma sees the scenic pictures of Tikamgarh estate and insists on visiting it with her friends for holidays. Unaware of Sunny being there, she reaches there and shows her tantrums as soon as she arrives. Co incidently Sunny gives Roma and her friends lift as no one has come to pick them from station. But she doesn’t recognise him.
Circumstances force Roma to stay at Sunny’s home. She destroys his place completely in a rage and he tells her to repair the place like before and only then can she leave. His dog, Buzo acts as her guard and makes sure she doesn’t run away. The moments they spend are hilarious and sweet. Finally, Roma tries to run away and a snake bites her in the forest. Sunny traces her, sucks the venom out and takes an unconscious Roma safely back to home.
Love Blooms
When Roma regains consciousness, she is changed completely. Also she is thankful to Sunny for saving her life. At night Sunny keeps an album for her, which has all their childhood memories and plays the tune which connects them both, Jab hum jawan honge on guitar. The tune and the pictures in the album makes Roma remember everything and they unite.
But this happiness is shortlived as Dinesh Singh arrives there and takes Roma away with him. Later, he wins her with lot of fights and struggles. They finally unite and live happily later.
Melodious Songs
Highlight of the movie are its immortal songs and I love each of them-
Jab hum jawaan honge, Teri tasveer mil gayee, Tumne di awaaz lo main, Badal yun garajta hai and Apne dil se badi dushmani thi. They were sung by maestros Lata Mangeshkar and Shabbir Kumar.
Do watch this movie for the marvellous chemistry between the leads and the fabulous songs. See you all with another movie with the charm of romance in it.
